Allah - there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of [all] existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is [presently] before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.
According to Tafseer Al-Mizan by Allama Tabatabai, this verse establishes the absolute sovereignty and knowledge of Allah. The term "Al-Qayyum" (the Sustainer) indicates that Allah is the foundation upon which all existence depends, not just in creation but in continuous sustenance.
Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq (A.S) has explained that "Kursi" (Throne) in this context refers to Allah's knowledge and authority that encompasses the entire creation. The verse emphasizes that no intercession occurs without Allah's permission, establishing the principle that all intermediaries function by divine will.
This verse is considered one of the greatest in the Quran for its comprehensive description of Allah's attributes and is often recited for protection and blessings according to traditions from Ahlulbayt.
